Why is Java so popular on the market?

Nick White (Engineering Lead): Java and C# have historically been the most popular modern languages over the last 10 – 15 years for server-side development, predominantly due to rich support they have had both in tools and open source communities.

As with all things in technology everything evolves, other languages are popular in specific areas, some of these also run on the JVM (e.g. Kotlin, Scala) or are getting support from large technology organisations, e.g. Go. On top of this a wide variety of other languages go hand in hand with “full stack” development, whether that full stack is UI to server/datastore or whether that is from the infrastructure you are running on to the application layer.

Tomasz Buczak (Tech Lead): Java was the first platform independent language. This made enterprise application development much easier and reduced maintenance costs. It can be said that Java, as a pioneer, has gained the most.

What are the challenges while coding in Java?

Nick: I don’t think there’s anything specifically more challenging or less in Java than other languages. The principals of good engineering extend to all software languages.

Tomasz: The biggest advantage of Java is also its biggest challenge. Independence from the platform causes a very large overhead of code. Hence, for a long time we’ve been observing constant simplification of the syntax.

What's your opinion about Java usage? Is this only hype? Do you prefer other programming languages?
